WALKING FOR PLEASURE

Our potted history

Way back in the annals of time there was a large walking group known as the Brentwood Ramblers, well they actually got a little to big for their boots if you pardon the pun.

It was in early 1988 that the Ramblers Association head office decided that the aformentioned group was large enough to split into two groups and it was to this end that on 25 March 1988 that the Havering & East London group was formed to fill a gap between Brentwood and West Essex areas.

The first committee meeting was held on 15 June 1988 and the inaugural A.G.M. took place on 31 October 1988 at Langtons in Hornchurch.

Some of the founders members present at that first A.G.M. were (here's where we start getting nostalgic):

Adrian Vincent-Jones, Frances Bradbrook, Vic Rusha, Judith Devine, John Dowding and Derek Stevens.

Since it's founding this Havering  group has gone from strength to strength and now conducts very popular walks on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Tuesday  morning walks being extremely popular at the moment. Apart from walking the highways and byways of Essex, the group organise many very interesting walks around London many being highlighted in the programme for the next three months.

Our group will always welcome new walkers with open arms. If you feel the urge to join us on any of our walks please turn up at any of the locations mentioned in the Walks Programme, introduce yourself to the leader and enjoy the companionship and good banter during the walk. Please also note that the time mentioned is always the start time. It is suggested that you arrive at the meeting place in good time so as not to miss the fun.

If you enjoy walking, you will enjoy walking with us.

If eventually you feel you would like to join the group on a permanent basis, you would, after three outings with us, be expected to become a member of the "Ramblers Association" and enjoy all the benefits that membership entails.

For details of membership contact our membership secretary Tony Hyde or any other committee member whilst on a walk or alternatively go to the Ramblers Association website  and fill in the application form on line. If you chose this option please mention on the form  that you would like to join the "Havering & East London" group.

 Walking with the Ramblers

All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to occur.
